I’m going with this. For the uninitiated, Blade is that late-90s Marvel classic where Wesley Snipes plays a half-vampire, half-human vampire hunter. He’s got all the strength of the vampires but none of their weaknesses. He can walk in the daylight. Hence: the Daywalker.

Now let’s remix that for politics.
In this story, Democrats are the humans - empathetic, idealistic, always trying to play fair, and perpetually getting their asses handed to them. Republicans are the vampires - ruthless, disciplined, morally bankrupt, and absolutely committed to winning by any means necessary. They’ll drain democracy dry if it gets them what they want.

And what the Democrats need right now — what they desperately need — is a political Daywalker.
Someone with the compassion and moral compass of the left but the ruthless efficiency and strategic killer instinct of the right.

Someone who can smile at brunch with educators and stare down a culture-war hit piece on Fox News without blinking.
Someone who can walk in the daylight and fight in the dark.

Why Gavin?
<div why.

While most Democrats hide behind carefully-crafted talking points and poll-tested empathy, Newsom’s out here doing podcasts with right-wing influencers and sitting across from guys like Charlie Kirk, in enemy territory — and actually holding his own. That’s not weakness, that’s fieldwork. That’s political combat training.

He doesn’t shrink from the smoke. He leans into it.

And that’s exactly what’s missing on the left. Too many Democrats want the power but not the fight. They want progress without confrontation. They want to “reach across the aisle” with people who are busy sawing the table in half.

Newsom? He knows how to wield power. He knows the optics game, the media game, and the narrative game and he plays them with a smirk. He’s not afraid to get his hands dirty or to draw political blood if it means protecting what’s worth fighting for.

Democrats need that energy.

They need someone who can smile like a humanitarian and strike like a tactician. Someone who can take the empathy that makes Democrats human and fuse it with the discipline, ruthlessness, and clarity of purpose that keeps Republicans winning.

That’s the Daywalker energy.
That’s the Blade energy.

Because here’s the truth: the “normal” Democrat, the idealist, the conciliator, the rule follower can’t win this fight. The other side stopped playing fair a long time ago.

If the future of democracy is going to survive, we need a new kind of Democrat.
One who’s not afraid to use the Blade.

So yeah, call him slick, call him too polished, call him ambitious. But until someone else steps up with that same mix of empathy and edge, Gavin Newsom is the closest thing we’ve got to a Daywalker.

And if Democrats want to keep walking in the light — they’re going to need him.

The Rise of the Alt-Black

I’ve been thinking about something to say it out loud: we are witnessing the rise of the alt-black.

What’s the alt-black? Well, “alt” is short for alternative. You probably already understand the idea of the “alt-right”—an extremist faction of right-wing individuals with rigid beliefs about America, who belongs here, and what “being American” even means. Now imagine a parallel version in Black America. Not politically identical, but similar in their extremes. That’s what I mean when I say “alt-black.”

Thanks for reading Chess not Checkers! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support our work.

The alt-black is a faction of Black folk who hold extreme views about Blackness. They set hard rules about who is truly Black, what traditions we should uphold, and what ideas are worthy of our loyalty. I call them “alt” because of their exclusionary mindset. And years ago, I used to jokingly call them the poor righteous teacher class—shoutout to the hip-hop group of the same name from the late 80s and early 90s. Not because they’re literally poor, but because they see themselves as being “of the earth,” righteous in their beliefs, and teachers of the “real” truth about Blackness.

They’re the ones who—often after a few African American Studies classes in college—decide they’re more knowledgeable about Black history than everyone else. That intellectual edge, real or imagined, becomes their authority. If you don’t believe what they believe, you’re out. And it’s not just disagreement—it’s a dismissal of your authenticity as a Black person.

This came up for me again during the Kendrick Lamar vs. Drake beef. People say Drake lost, and maybe that’s true, but what stood out to me was how Kendrick leaned into these alt-black ideas and leveraged them in his battle with Drake. In 2025, it’s often those who see hip-hop as sacred, who carry that quasi-intellectual swagger, who believe they represent the “true” Black America and everyone else is simply posing as Black.

You see it in other cultural debates too—like the ones around Jack and Jill or Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard. The alt-black loves to draw lines. Being a Black American with Black lineage isn’t enough. Your work, your contributions to the community—irrelevant. All that matters is your alignment with their beliefs.

So, what’s wrong with being Alt Black?

Here’s the problem: the alt-black divides us. They create factions and loyalties that only extend to those who see the world exactly as they do. “They not like us” becomes the anthem—literally, since They Not Like Us became a kind of rallying cry for this mindset. The phrase gets deployed whenever someone needs to mark another person as “not one of us,” even if that person is Black.

But here’s the ironic part: alt-black individuals often present themselves as having all the answers, yet if you look closely at their lives, there’s usually turmoil—strained relationships, unreliability, poor communication, bouts of depression, and other challenges. Instead of addressing these issues internally, they point to the world as the problem. It’s the external circumstances, the “system,” the “them” that explain why they haven’t become who they want to be.

In truth, what holds them back isn’t Blackness. It’s the lack of execution, consistency, discipline, coalition-building, and collaboration. In 2025, it’s their inability to build, collaborate, and stand up counter-systems that actually prevent US from thriving. But it’s easier to paint the problem as someone else’s fault than to address those gaps.

I believe the alt-black has been slowly growing for more than a decade. You’ll notice them most in pop culture debates, where they tend to take definitive sides rooted in their rigid beliefs. Over the coming weeks, I’ll be writing more about how the alt-black shows up—and how their version of “unity” actually deepens divisions, especially within the Black community.

If you’ve got thoughts on this, I’m sure some of you will disagree (and I’m ready for it), drop your comments below. And if you’re not subscribed to Chess not Checkers yet, now’s the time—because we’re just getting started with this conversation.

Thanks for reading Chess not Checkers! The funny thing is that it wasn’t to Kendrick- it was to the opps, goofy asses whose only goal is to oppose whatever is “popular.” They’re pop opps, if you will. If you’re winning, statistically speaking, then they’re not feeling you and they’ll find any reason to support that dislike. Kendrick is simply their champion, hired and sent to slay the dragon. Taking the analogy further, Opps are like the townspeople, too scared and weak to do the job themselves however cheering from the sidelines at the bloodshed and gore.

What is Opp Culture?

No, Opp culture is not Other People’s Property. Opp culture, as I refer to it here, is the practice of enthusiastically and cynically engaging in opposition to a person, idea, or event. The key word here is cynically.

There’s a “culture” arising that rewards, both socially and psychologically, the person standing in “opposition” to an idea, person, or event. It’s no longer neccessary to have fresh ideas that add to the conversation, you need simply to be in opposition to a prevailing sentiment to receive engagement on social media.

This creates a problem. Why? Because now, the non critical thinkers who lie amongst us in the social media-sphere can simply oppose shit instead of actually bringing thoughtful ideas and commentary on the happenings of the day.

OPP culture isn’t simply about having a differing opinion - that’s actually a healthy thing! Instead it’s more concerned with proving you wrong and sometimes to simply be the contrarian.

Other Opp Culture Subjects

Drake v Kendrick is simply the latest incarnation of Opp Culture. A quick review of your recent social media feed will produce post onthe following topics:

Black women v black men

LeBron v Jordan

MAGA v Progressives

Caitlyn Clark v Angel Reese

Final Thoughts

It’s not that Drake lost his battle to Kendrick lost his battle, but it wasn’t the Kendrick it was to the people Was a 20 million V1 the reason that I’m looking at all of this stuff with the side eye is because really it’s not that people don’t care if something is actually true. They only care that they’re on the opposite side of people they like or dislike it they want to be the opposition, opposing as opposed to promoting anything right unless they’re promoting opposition in the whole goal is simply to be an antagonist to those who are considered the winners and so at least speaking right we we see this in the opposition to not only Drake, but to Katelynn Clark

“They Not Like Us” serves as an anthem for the opposition, capturing the desire to see a downfall, much like the perceived decline of Drake and the rise of a new cultural era. It’s not that Drake lost a direct battle to Kendrick Lamar or even to the public; the real battle was against a collective mentality. This mentality isn’t interested in the truth but in simply opposing those they either admire or despise. People engage in opposition for its own sake rather than promoting any constructive agenda. The ultimate goal is to antagonize those deemed successful. This dynamic is evident not only in the criticism of Drake but also in the opposition faced by athletes like Caitlin Clark.

I don’t know though. A fleeting thought is an idea or notion that pops into my brain that I (typically) squash almost immediately. I squash it because I either think it’s wrong (both morally and logically) or because I don’t want to grapple with the ramifications of letting it linger- like the idea that it may actually be correct.

They’re uncomfortable, unsettling, and often challenge the narratives we’ve built around ourselves and the world. But what if fleeting thoughts aren’t meant to be squashed or ignored? What if they’re actually invitations—opportunities to dig deeper into our beliefs, assumptions, and biases?

This blog is an experiment in critical thinking. Everything can be questioned. I’ll share my fleeting thoughts, unfiltered and raw, as a way to hold space for exploration and self-reflection. Some of these ideas may provoke, others may resonate, but all of them come from a place of genuine curiosity.

So, consider this your disclaimer: these are not fully formed opinions, nor are they declarations of truth. They are musings, wrestlings, and questions that I feel compelled to confront. Let’s embrace the discomfort together, and who knows? We might uncover a truth or two along the way.

Let’s get into it.
